I am a counsellor, supervisor and coach with extensive experience providing both long term and time-limited therapy in the NHS, charity sector, and private practice.
More info/Book a meetingI understand that life isn’t always straightforward, and distressing events – whether recent or from your past – can impact on your quality of life and leave you feeling overwhelmed and out of control. Therapy can enhance your understanding of yourself, and improve your communication as well as your relationship with yourself and others.
How I work
My area of expertise is loss, and helping clients deal with it in all its forms, which includes bereavement, job loss, relationship breakdowns, loss of sense of self (which includes depression, anxiety, chronic illness, disability or medical / healthcare diagnosis) and all of the many other life changes that may happen outside of your control.
I am a specialist loss counsellor and supervisor working with a social enterprise contracted to Salford NHS Trust and have worked for a leading bereavement charity for many years as both a trainer and supervisor. I approach all counselling relationships in a trauma-informed way, and am able to support you with a wide range of issues, whether it be anxiety, depression, low self esteem and self worth, guilt, shame, anger or any other presenting psychological challenges you might be facing.
I can offer you a welcoming, confidential space to explore your current situation and the impact it’s having on you, and together we can work to facilitate any desired changes and develop techniques to manage any ongoing issues.
I am an accredited integrative counsellor, which means rather than working with you through the lens of one psychotherapeutic approach and I am able to utilise a wide range of tools, modalities and techniques that can be tailored to meet your individual, unique circumstances.
I believe therapy is a very personal experience, and it is important that we are able to build a trusting therapeutic alliance together in order to maximise the potential benefits that you can gain from therapy. Therefore, in order to help you decide if we are a good fit, I offer an initial, free, no-obligation consultation, to give you the opportunity to explore what working together would be like.
Based in South Manchester, I can offer face-to-face, telephone and online counselling, as well as therapy outdoors in nature. I can offer daytime, evening and weekend slots to suit your needs.
My fees are £55-£75 per 50 minute counselling or coaching session, and £80-£100 for 1.5 hours of supervision. Pay what you can afford. I also offer low cost sessions to students and people on low or means tested income.

More info/Book a meetingI am friendly and warm Psychotherapist, with over 16 years experience in the role. I provide a safe space where you can talk in confidence about difficult emotional issues.
I can help you make sense of painful feelings or troubling thoughts which may be stopping you from getting the most out of your life and work with you to recognise your patterns of relating to yourself and to others. I can offer you an opportunity to learn skills to break out of limiting patterns and ways of being. These skills become an emotional tool kit which you can take around with you for the rest of your life and which give you the freedom to make new choices and move forward in your life.
I have experience working with depression, anxiety, low self esteem, relationship problems, OCD, trauma, abuse, grief and loss. For those suffering loss, it may mean loss of a loved one, but may also mean the loss of a hope or expectation; not being where you had hoped to be in life.
I draw on several models of therapy, depending on your needs, but my core model is TA (Transactional Analysis) Psychotherapy. I offer face to face and online therapy (on zoom), long or short term therapy. My fees are £50 per session, although I also offer a limited number of reduced rate sessions for those on low income or benefits. You are welcome to email or text me to set up an appointment or to arrange an initial chat on the phone (or on zoom) to help you decide if you would like to proceed with regular sessions.
Testimonials:
Some previous clients have written about their experiences of therapy with me:
‘A massive ‘thank you’ for all your support during some pretty dark times – I know it’s a cliché, but I really don’t think I would be where I am now without the impact of your counselling. You very definitely made a difference to my life’.
‘You helped me not be ashamed. You’ve made me feel comfortable with myself’.
‘I didn’t think I could change, but through therapy with you, I have’.
‘I’ve found the counselling experience with Nicola to be life-changing. It’s a vulnerable and daunting thing to come to therapy and open up to a relative stranger, but Nicola’s warm, non judgemental and understanding approach has meant I was able to find techniques to reframe, and, in some cases, totally overcome some of my biggest and most deep rooted fears and learned beliefs. I’m not the same person I was when I first started counselling and I owe a huge chunk of that personal progress to my experience in therapy. I couldn’t recommend the service more!’

I work with people who are experiencing anxiety, who are feeling overwhelmed or burnt out. This may be due to recent experiences, a life time of difficulties or childhood events which have left them feeling unable to cope, or with unhealthy coping strategies. I help my clients to develop or regain a sense of agency and safety in their lives.
Before training as a counsellor I spent many years working as a doula, helping people to adjust to their new responsibilities and identities as parents. As a result, I often work with people who are struggling during the perinatal period (encompassing pregnancy, birth and early parenthood). This may be due to post-natal depression, anxiety or birth trauma, or could be as a result of losing a baby. I am an accredited Traumatic Birth Recovery – 3 Step Rewind practitioner, which is an NLP technique used to gently ease the lingering emotional distress caused by birth or perinatal trauma.
I also work with adults who have recently discovered that they have been struggling due to undiagnosed ADHD or autism. Whilst I am unable to diagnose these conditions, I welcome clients who have self-identified, with or without an official diagnosis. As a neurodivergent counsellor, I am particularly sensitive to how environment, experiences, and changes in circumstances can impact on feelings of safety and well being. As such, I use trauma-informed approaches to provide a calm, safe, welcoming space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences to alleviate anxiety and find self-acceptance.

Psychodynamic counselling can help us to look at our distress in a safe space with an other. Doing this with a counsellor allows us to have the distress held so that we can start to think about how things really are for us.
More info/Book a meetingMy practice is psychoanalytically informed. This has a here & now focus. It isn’t essential to go back to childhood, it’s more about the patterns of difficulty we currently experience. We may notice symptoms that are causing distress or just feel something isn’t quite right. The focus is on our ways of relating; how we relate to ourselves and to others. This can be a specific focus or pattern (for shorter term work) or it may be more exploratory.

In my core approach to therapy I use Transactional Analysis and Integrative Psychotherapy and the way I work with my clients is known as relational and person-centred
More info/Book a meetingIs the idea of change on your mind? Do you want to change something about yourself, or about something that’s happening in your life? Do you want to change feelings of stress, anxiety, depression, unfulfillment, lack of confidence, fear, anger, frustration or sadness? Are you facing a challenging or difficult decision? Or are you experiencing emotions that are confusing you, or do you want to explore aspects of any of your relationships, whether that’s with your partner, family, friends, managers or work colleagues?
Any of these experiences can bring someone to psychotherapy, and psychotherapy can help you to make sense of any “stuckness” in your life, or any emotions that you feel are inhibiting your goals or your personal growth. Transactional Analysis psychotherapy maintains that, “anyone can change”, and this is my aim for you, that through working with me you will be able to work through any unhelpful perceptions, mindset or mental blocks.
I have a first class honours degree in Psychology and I hold a Certificate in Therapeutic Counselling from South Manchester Centre for Psychotherapy, where I successfully completed four years training. In my core approach to therapy I use Transactional Analysis and Integrative Psychotherapy and the way I work with my clients is known as relational and person-centred, which means that I recognise that nobody knows you better than you do, and that this matters in your quest for change, whatever that may relate to in your life. Through empathic listening, astute exploring and gentle guidance I will support you as our safe, confidential and therapeutic conversations help you to draw on your own self-awareness and understanding to make sense of your feelings and your experiences so that you can work through any fears, anxieties or mental blocks to arrive at a more easeful state of mind.
Professional therapists are required to join a recognised regulatory body and I am a graduate member of the British Psychological Society and an individual member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. I receive regular supervision from a senior Psychotherapist, I am fully insured and I maintain up to date professional development through attendance at conferences and educational and developmental events.
I have worked one to one with clients for a number of years both face to face and online (Zoom or phone). You can work with me face to face on Wednesday afternoons at the Counselling Rooms in Chorlton, south Manchester, and at other times I offer daytime and evening appointments by Zoom or phone.
If you feel unsure about therapy, I offer a free 15 minute phone call where we can talk about what you are looking for, and you can get a feeling for whether you would like to work with me as your therapist. You can book your free call at this link: https://calendly.com/debbiebusby/psychotherapy-introduction-call

I am a BACP registered counsellor offering individual counselling for adults from an established shared practice in Chorlton, South Manchester. I also work online using Zoom.
More info/Book a meetingI work with people who are feeling stuck and looking for help to move forward. This could be around difficulty dealing with emotions, self-destructive behaviours, self-criticism or feelings of not being good enough.
It could be being held back in life by anxiety, distressing thoughts or compulsive behaviours. It could involve uncertainty around questions of self-identity, relationships or life direction, or just a sense that things aren’t right.
Whether these issues are recent or more long-standing, change for the better is possible and therapy can help.
As an integrative therapist, I draw on several approaches in order to meet you where you are and work at the right pace and direction for you. My aim is to help deepen your understanding of how things are currently and consider how things could be different. I will listen, offer questions and thoughts and, where relevant, support you in making changes.
Starting therapy can feel like a big step and finding the right fit is important, so I offer a free 30-minute first meeting to consider working together. If you’d like to set one of these up, get in touch and I’ll get back to you with my current availability as soon as I can.
